AUSTIN (KXAN) — University of Texas rookie relief pitcher Dylan Volantis has been named one of the semifinalists for the top honor in collegiate baseball.
USA Baseball tabbed Volantis, tied for sixth in NCAA Division I with 12 saves, as one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award. Past winners include Georgia’s Charlie Condon last year, Louisiana State’s Dylan Crews in 2023 and Longhorns slugger Ivan Melendez in 2022.
Volantis has also been named one of the semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. During Southeastern Conference games, he secured 11 out of Texas' 22 victories, thereby shattering an SEC record that had stood for 22 years, previously set by Ole Miss pitcher Steven Head.
As the SEC tournament approaches, Volantis has thrown 43.1 innings and surrendered eight earned runs. He tops the league stats with an ERA of 1.59, a WHIP of 0.85, and opponents have managed only a .160 batting average against him.
One of the eight players from the SEC who made it to the semifinalist list is Volantis. Texas holds the top seed position for the SEC tournament and is set to start their gameplay on Thursday in Hoover, Alabama.
